Thomas
Cannell, second son of Robert S. Cannell and
Gertrude Cannell was born August 3, 1913 in
Bishop, Inyo County, CA. He married Phoebe Irene
Coulter August 12, 1937 in Forest Grove, Oregon.
They had met at Pacific University in 1934.
From 1937 until 1947 they lived in Forest Grove
where their four children were born. John
James, Feb. 24, 1939; Sheila
and Sharon, Jan. 31,
1941; Phoebe Ann, Feb.
1, 1942.
From 1947 to 1949 the family lived in Grants
Pass,
Placer,
and Wolf Creek in southern Oregon where Tom
was interested in the Copper Queen Mine.
In 1949 they moved to Monmouth where Phoebe
taught in the high school. In 1950 they moved
to Hubbard and Phoebe taught English and was
librarian in the new North Marion High School.
In April of 1951 Tom's father died of a heart
attack after having his leg amputated because
of circulatory problemshe was 76.
In 1954 they moved to a farm in the Lone Elder
area south of Canby, and in 1957 to 5 acres
about 2 miles north of Canby. In 1963 Phoebe
went to Canby Union High School as librarian.
She retired in 1978.
All
four children attended Portland State College
in Portland.
After retirement, Tom and Phoebe moved to Metzger,
between Tigard and Portland, near Sheila
and Sharon. They enjoyed traveling two trips
to the Isle of Man, a trip to Hong Kong and
Tokyo and several trips to Baja, CA in their
motor home.
Tom died in 1988 at the age of 76. After a series
of small strokes he had been in a nursing home
and passed away peacefully in March 1988.
Phoebe
lived on in their home and then moved to an
apartment in the Summerfield Clubhouse Estates
in Tigard. (PIX E) As her health began to fail
in her 87th year, she moved into a home run
by a wonderful Filipino family. She was still
up and around and had her own little sitting
room/bedroom. But then in January of 2001 she
died peacefully in her own bed of respiratory
problems.
