Forest Grove, Oregon, was a quiet, peaceful little town. This all changed on May 20, 1939 when Richard Cannell Marshall was born to John Creston and Katherine Emily Marshall. Richard yelled constantly and with such vigor that his parents decided, after that first two weeks, that two children would be more than enough! About that time it was discovered that a switch from cow’s milk to goat’s milk improved his disposition immensely. He soon became chubby and developed an appetite for food that has remained with him to this day.

Richard had a pleasant childhood in Forest Grove and stayed there until 1948 when his family moved to Vancouver, WA. He and his brother, John, shared a paper route and worked many different jobs as they went through the Vancouver schools. Richard graduated from Hudson’s Bay High School in 1957.

At that time he began working for Vancouver Roofing and Sheet Metal and attending Clark College part time. He went on to graduate from Clark and moved to Ellensburg, WA, where he attended Central Washington University. After one year at Central and undecided about his future, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during one of the "Berlin Crises" in the early 1960’s. After basic and advanced infantry training at Fort Ord, California, Richard was flown to Fort Dix, New Jersey and later was sent to Germany on a troop ship.

He finally arrived in Bamberg, West Germany, and became a "funds clerk" for the 2nd Battle Group, 4th Infantry Division. In Bamberg, he met a German girl by the name of Waltraud Klenner. Richard and Waltraud married, traveled extensively, and started their family with the birth of Catherine Elaine in 1963.

The Marshalls then returned to Ellensburg, WA, where Richard graduated from Central Washington University. They then moved to Hockinson, WA where he took a teaching job at Ridgefield Jr. High. He later switched to Hockinson Junior High where he taught for fourteen years. During this time period, Erika Louise and Richard Creston made fine additions to the family.

Richard finished his working career in land development and tree farming. After his divorce, he married Beth Jungbauer in Yachats, Oregon, on March 11, 1994 adding her two children to the family.

Beth continued teaching and Richard worked on property owned by his brother John. They have retired to Nehalem on the Oregon Coast where they own a small business that supplies tools to Ranger Districts in the national forests. They are very active in the Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church where Beth is the choir director and Richard sings bass. Each December Beth and Richard host a sing-a-long for family and friends for which Beth plays piano and leads the singing.
