October 2005 • The Bunch Family Travels to Disneyland (Tom/Jim/Susan)
(Written by Susan)
Well, we have returned safely from a wonderful week in Disneyland. We had such a great time - it couldn't have gone better.
We rode rides, went to shows like Aladdin and Fantasmic, played, and had a great time. The weather was a little rainy our first two days but we just ran past all those umbrella-laden Californian's and enjoyed the short lines. We got to do a Princess Lunch at Ariel's Grotto restaurant where we were visited by several princess. Riley was thrilled to see her favorite princess-Ariel, the Little Mermaid, who complimented Riley's red hair.
All in all, it was a wonderful trip and we couldn't have had more fun. |

Claudia reported that they also have friends Don and Julie Sanborn join them for part of the time. She said: "They are our kids' second parents. When the kids were little Don and Julie used to ask us to go away for a weekend just so they could keep the kids. They are greatly loved by all of us." She went on to say, "I hope you get a feel for the absolutely marvelous time we had together. I hope it was as memorable for everyone else as it was for Bob and me."

Fall 2005 • News from the Jim Cannells of Hawaii (Tom/Jim)
(Written by Perseka)
Jim, the girls, and I flew to NYC and had a good visit with the Billy and Bobby at the Merchant Marine Academy in early September. Bobby is now officially a plebe and he is also sworn in as a Navy Reservist. Both boys performed in the beat retreat concert which was awesome. It was hard work, believe me, to be marching in uniform and playing for 2 hours non-stop in a small hot gym. We also enjoyed watching the band doing their formations and playing during the acceptance ceremony.
The boys were able to come back into NYC with us for overnight on the weekend and we had a great time walking around in the area of our hotel which was near Central Park. The kids asked Jim if he used to do that in his day when we saw some roller skaters performing amazing moves in Central Park. He said in his day they were happy to keep upright!
 |
We had beautiful weather for the trip and were so happy to find Billy
and Bobby both doing very well and seeming to be very happy to be in the same school, going through the same experiences. They had a band trip to Toronto in August. Billy is now learning to play the bagpipes with a special group, and continues to play the trombone with the regular band. He will go out on his first shipping internship in November for 4 months. He's trying to get on a Matson ship between California and Hawaii even though we say, "See the world!"
Bobby plays trombone in the regular band also and has joined the Fanfare Trumpets, an elite brass group. He will be home for a week the end of October when his first semester ends.
At home Maggie is busy as a junior with studies and cross country. Katie, sophomore, is also busy with studies and tennis.
We look forward to having my mom, from Hong Kong, and my brother and his wife, from Washington state, visit us for Thanksgiving.

Grandma Ruthie Burgoine had to wrestle several folks for a seat on a full plane but she made the flight from Portland, OR down to AZ by the next day and was able to stay 2 weeks to help with Zachary AND with the family's move into their new home, still in Mesa, AZ. With 114 degree weather that is a mother-in-law Guillermo has to appreciate! |

March 2005 • (Susan / Ruthie / Nancy)
Ruthie and Dick Burgoine travel to AZ
I wanted to share some pix from our March trip to AZ to visit daughter Nancy and her husband Guillermo. A much healthier trip than our Feb. jaunt, I am happy to report! We had great weather and enjoyed several hikes, spring training baseball games and visiting with friends in thearea. Some friends from San Jose joined us in Tucson so it was fun to share activities with them.
The wildflowers were putting on a real show this spring. Dick, Nancy and I enjoyed them while hiking and in the Desert Botanical Garden in Papago Park in Phoenix. The garden was started in 1939 and has an extensive collection of desert flora.
We three also enjoy hiking in the South Mountain Preserve in Phoenix. This area has many trails and is not far from Nancy and Guillermo's.

We're about to depart on the Copper Queen Mine tour in the old mining town of Bisbee, AZ. Everyone is required to wear a coat, miner's hat and light complete with battery pack for the 1.5 hour tour into the underground mine. In the early 1900's Bisbee's population was about 20,000, the largest city between St. Louis and San Francisco. It was very well planned with electricity, a trolley through the town and daily rail service from El Paso. Now the population is about 6,000. Bisbee is the county seat of Cochise County.

This is one of our hikes in Sabino Canyon near Tucson. Just after this photo was taken we came across a gila monster on the trail.
On another day we hiked the scenic Phoneline Trail in Sabino Canyon.
As an update from March Nancy and Guillermo have purchased a larger home in Mesa and will be moving in mid June. They are awaiting the arrival of their baby boy in early July. |
Spring 2005 • (Jane / Julian)
Julian Taplin travels to China
(See another trip's account in 2004, March.)
China...I have now done, I think, 14 trips. I first went in '84 on the first US-Chinese psychological convention delegation. Then I went back in '94 to see daughter Susan who was taking a (U Washington) med school elective in Chengdu. We happened to meet a spunky little 10 year old and started corresponding. When I got appointed to a UN team in '96 I naturally elected Ching to go see "my girl".
What started as a bit of consulting in '98 has gradually evolved, through the anonymous written questions at the end of talks, into 4 books. General idea has been to take the Chinese questions, apply basic psychological responses, and write a manuscript for a particular audience. My colleague translates them. To date we have parents, adolescents, young children, and a Q&A book. One for teachers should come out in the fall. Our little operation now has a chief Chinese colleague, exec secretary, and director of marketing.
So nowadays I go to Chengdu, get a schedule of talks, either about 400 parents or 4,000 adolescents, and do a little pony show. Afterwards, I sign books. Sometimes I hang out at bookstores, signing. Pray that my soul is not too corrupted by the wonderful narcotic of book signing!
 |
The girls are Hui and Fei, cousins of that first little girl, who now is grown. They're soon college bound which is exciting, because the family is very, very poor. Well, I should say, has no money. They're not "poor" at all. Hui is taking the big (Huge) national college entrance exam in early June this year, and Fei next year. I inquired about having them visit here, but our vice-consul held out very little hope of getting a visa. Growl!
Three of our books in piles at the Cheunxilu bookstore in Chengdu. Yao Ming's picture is there, but the books are mine! That was last year, and we have a fourth now.
The two wonderful munchkins are part of a sequence, with #1 reading, #2 showing interest, #2 getting book for herself, and finally both of them poring over their own books.
Finally, a random shot of part of a group of 6,200 students I talked to one day in some country town - a little one, a million or less. The amazing thing about those talks is the number of folks who follow up with emails. I spend quite a bit of time each day emailing them.
Anyone interested in more information or a trip to China, contact me! jtaplin@dca.net |

February 2005 •
(Susan / Ruthie)
February 1, 2005 we flew to Las Vegas. We spent two days in Las Vegas and then headed for Death Valley in our rental car. I (Ruthie) had been to Death Valley in March, 1955 with Mom, Daddy, Aunt Kay, Aunt Margaret, Doug and Mary as we returned home from Phyllis and Lloyd's wedding, but not since and Dick had never been there. We found the different geology of the area very interesting.
We then traveled to Palm Springs for a few days. We were lucky to have nice weather the entire trip but unlucky with our health. We got the flu and one or both of us was feeling pretty miserable every day. Unfortunately, we were unable to do any hiking as planned.
We have high hopes for a happier trip to AZ in mid March when we go down to visit Nancy and Guillermo and take in a few sights and baseball games! We will be with Nancy and Guillermo in Mesa for about one week and in the Tucson area for another week.

(Tom / Sheila)
Peter and Sheila took a one-week cruise to the "Mexican Riviera", with ports o'call at Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas. It was a great time--a real visit to summer. Highlights were the weather, the bronze sculptures along the Puerto Vallarta ocean front promenade, the lunch in Todos Santos, north of Cabo San Lucas, the flowers everywhere, Peter singing Danny Boy in the Talent Show -- and Peter winning $200 at bingo! Pictures are of us and the ship in Acapulco, and flowers in Todos Santos.
