Cullens on the Highways and Byways of the World (Tom/Sheila)

2004 has been a busy year of travel for Sheila and Peter. March included a terrific trip to Greece, "In the Footsteps of St. Paul", which included visits to Phillipi and Corinth as well as classical history sites such as Delfi and Crete. The previous six months had been spent preparing for the trip, led by the same Fr. Don who led our trip to the Holy Land in 1995, and everything about the trip lived up to our hopes. I chose the picture shown at the right because it looks so Greek!--The temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounion south of Athens.

Since Greece, we have enjoyed a visit from an Uruguyan (actually Austrian) acquaintance in April, a trip to LA to visit Brendan and Aidan in May, a short stay in Sunriver with Brigid and Annemarie and families in June, and a great visit to San Francisco in early July to meet with old friends from our Los Angeles days. The highlight of that trip was a sail on San Francisco Bay on a lovely Saturday on a restored "scow schooner", the Alma, run by the National Parks Service. Our friends from Phoenix, the Dietsches, came back for a week's visit after the San Francisco trip. A fine year of coming and going--and it's only a bit more than half over! Looking forward to the reunion in 10 days and to seeing everyone.

Billy Cannell enters the Merchant Marine Academy (Tom/Jim)

The Jim Cannell family ( Jim, wife Perseka, Billy, Bobby, Maggie, and Katie) traveled from their home in Honolulu to New York the first week in July. They had a grand time sightseeing in NYC and then on Friday they traveled to Long Island with son Billy to see him inducted into the Merchant Marine Academy.

Billy will have two weeks of boot-camp-type training and then begin his regular school year. The Academy makes available a website: http://www.usmma.edu/life/indoc/2008/photos.asp which shows photos of the activities of class of 2008. Jimmy has spotted Billy in several pix...in the band and other places.

On Saturday, while Billy was "boot-camping", the rest of the family was joined by Jim's oldest son Tom (who drove in from PA) and his children Brooks and Grace for a day at Coney Island. Jim said the weather could not have been more perfect and they had a wonderful time. They flew back to HI on Sunday.

5/2004 A Taplin Trip to Austria (Jane/Julian/Greg/Malachy)
In celebration of Greg Taplin turning 40 (Feb. 29th), his family (wife Shona and son Malachy), his father Julian and Julian's wife Carolyn traveled to Austria, a place which has always fascinated Greg. They made the trip in May of this year. Pictured from L: Greg, Carolyn, Shona holding Malachy. The other picture Julian provided is of Salzburg Castle (Hohensalzburg).

3/2004 Taplins Travel to China (Jane)
In March Julian, along with Christine and Claude, Geraldine and John traveled to China. (Photo #1) There, besides traveling from Guilin to Chengdu and seeing much fascinating countryside between, Julian, Geraldine, and Claude all gave talks to large audiences, in their own field of psychology, medicine, and law respectively.

Julian has had connections with China on a personal and professional level since he and daughter Susan traveled there in 1994 and met young Lin PianPian who was trying to sell them water. Since that time Julian has made many trips to China and written 3 books for the Chinese market, with plans for a fourth one. As he wrote:"I can't teach Chinese anything about China or Chinese culture, but we do know a thing or two about dealing with the fallout on families and children of advertising, violent movies, sexual videos, fashion addictions, distracted parents, etc...I offer specifics in three skill areas, thinking, learning/teaching, and preventing." This shows Julian's enthusiastic audience (Photo #2) and then later lined up for book signing. (Photo #3)

Julian has a wonderful set of pictures which proved too large to include in this website (it would have been too slow to enjoy properly); however, I would love to share them, so please email as instructed on the DIRECTORY page if you would like to receive both Julian's own narrative and a CD with the pictures. This picture (Photo #4) is a story in itself...an admiring artist rendered a portrait of Julian.
