Julian Robert Taplin was born to Gertrude Jane Cannell Taplin and Alfred Eric Heeley Taplin on February 5, 1937 in Greenwich, London, England.
Julian's schooling began at the old sandstone school in Hermiston, Oregon, and continued in England, Germany, the Isle of Man, and England again. He returned to the United States at the age of 18, and graduated from Oregon State University.
He married Earlene Ann MacNeill in 1963. (divorced, 1987) They had two children:
Gregory Charles, born February 29, 1964 in Eugene, Oregon, and Susan Elizabeth, born April 14, 1967 in Roseburg, Oregon.
Julian married Carolyn Gibson September 17, 1994 in Wilmington, Delaware, September 17, 1994. They live in Wilmington, Delaware. Carolyn is a Professor (microbiology) at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
After completing the PhD in clinical psychology in 1967, Julian was a postdoctoral fellow in Boston. After a post in Bremerton, Washington, he directed the Morrison Center in Portland, Oregon for 16 years, and then directed the Division of Child Mental Health of the State of Delaware for 14 years. He retired in 2001.
Julian has had connections with China on a personal and professional level since he and daughter Susan traveled there in 1994 and met young Lin PianPian who was trying to sell them water. Since that time Julian has made many trips to China and written several books for the Chinese market. His Family Education Department at the Academy of Social Science, Chengdu, is the base for a program helping youth and families cope with rapid westernizing at the As he wrote:

"I can't teach the Chinese anything about China or Chinese culture, but we can help families deal with the fallout from advertising, violent and sexual entertainment, fashion addictions, distracted parents, etc...Our program offers specifics in three skill areas, thinking, learning/teaching, and preventing."
In March, 2004 Julian traveled to China with his sisters and their husbands (See 2004 in Newsletter section.) the second in a continuing series of such expeditions.

Gregory married Shona Doyle 1993 in Edinburgh, Scotland. |

They have one son, Malachy Charles born December 21, 2000 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Greg and Shona live in Viroqua, Wisconsin where Greg is a PA/RN student and restores historic buildings and antique furniture in his spare time. Shona, who grew up in Northern Ireland, manages corporate travel throughout Wisconsin for a company based out of Chicago, Illinois. |

Susan married Michael Curtis August 14, 1999 in Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington.

Susan and Michael live in Missoula, Montana where they both practice medicine. They have two children, Ian Gregory born January 11, 2002 in Missoula Montana; and Juliet Earlene born October 12, 2004 in Missoula, Montana. |
