John was born on September 17, 1937, the older of the two children of Katherine Emily Cannell and John Creston Marshall. John's brother, Richard Cannell Marshall (Dick) was born on May 20, 1939, and the brothers have remained in close contact throughout their lives. Dr. Fred Richards oversaw the birth process and arranged for Katherine to stay at Auntie Hubbard's for pre-birth and post-birth care. Auntie Hubbard was Dr. Richards wife's sister.

John maintains the selection of his parents, including their extended families, was the best decision of his lifetime. He also maintains the most important things he learned in his life can be traced to his parents, and the supportive network of his 14 aunts and uncles and his two grandparents still living at his birth.

John's grandparents were a hearty and courageous bunch. John Reid Marshall emigrated from Melrose, Scotland in 1891 at the age of 18. Zella Edna Marshall's ancestors arrived in the United States in the Colonial period. Robert Spear Cannell emigrated to the United States in 1900 at age 25. He returned to The Isle of Man in 1904 where he married Margaret Gertrude Cannell before returning to Bishop, California. By the time of John Robert's birth, John Reid Marshall had passed away and so had Maraget Gertrude Cannell. With numerous moves behind them John's living grandparents, Robert Spear Cannell and Zella Edna Marshall, had firmly established roots in Forest Grove, Oregon.

John's childhood years, 1937-48, were spent with relative ease in the friendly confines of Forest Grove. The family properties on Curtis Avenue, originally purchased by Robert Spear Cannell, contained three side-by-side family homes. Robert Spear Cannell lived in a small home constructed on the East end of the property. The Thomas Cannells (Tom, Phoebe and their children: Jim, Sheila, Sharon and Ann) lived in the middle home; and Katherine and Creston and John and Dick lived in the Western most home.

The combined five acres of land provided an educational playground, and Dick, cousin Jim, and John spent their days investigating and playing in the fields and wooded acres of the property. All three were reluctant students when school age arrived, viewing school attendance as an interruption of life at its best.

Daily life in Forest Grove centered on home, church, school and family and remained stable until 1947 when the Thomas Cannells moved to southern Oregon. The next year John Creston took a job in Vancouver and the family moved to Vancouver where Katherine and John Creston would remain for the rest of their lives.

John attended elementary school, junior high and high school in Vancouver, graduating from high school in 1955. He attended Clark College 1955-57, followed by one year at San Jose State. He completed his B.S. degree at Portland State in 1960, Masters at Portland State in 1965, and an M.A. in history at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, in 1968.

John's Aunt Margaret gave him a tennis racquet on his 12th birthday and he has remained an avid participant ever since. John was the Washington State Junior College singles champion in 1956 and 1957 while enrolled at Clark College. The following year he went on to play at San Jose State in San Jose, CA. In his senior year John played at Portland State where he was the Oregon Collegiate conference singles and doubles champion and a participant in the NAIA championships held in Illinois. Throughout his career John was a winner or runner-up in over 150 tournament events.

John and Fern Sakrison (Annie) were married on December 27, 1958 in Vancouver, WA. They lived in Hockinson, WA until their divorce in September of 1976. John and Annie has four children: Kaisa Suzanne born 1/4/60; John Steven born 4/8/62; Robert James born 11/3/64; and Steven James born 8/1/70.

John's professional career spanned 15 years with the Vancouver Schools as a teacher and administrator, and 18 years in administration with the City of Vancouver. Following retirement from the city, John spent 8 years as a volunteer, helping establish the Fort Vancouver Historic Reserve and an affiliated Trust. The Reserve Trust supports the Reserve partners (US Army, National Park Service, State of WA, and City of Vancouver) in rehabilitating historic properties, in managing assets, and in maintaining educational programs for the publich. In 1999 John received the Clark County First Citizen Award for his active role in the community over many years.

John and Dona Drake were married in Battle Ground, WA on April 28, 1979. John and Dona had been colleagues in working for the Vancouver schools in developing a humanities approach to education. After John and Dona decided to marry, they determined to sell their individual homes and purchase a residence more suitable to their enlarged family. This effort resulted in the purchase of a home located at 7501 SE Evergreen Highway where they have continued to live throughout their married life.

At the time of their marriage Dona had two children: Kim Christine, age 24; and Brent Gregory, age 23. Dona also had one grandchild, Cora Eileen, age 1. John, on the other hand, had four children: Kaisa Suzanne, age 19, who lived with her mother; John Steven, age 16; Robert James, age 14, and Steven James, age 8.

John and Dona committed to fostering relationships among their children, and to building ties among their respective families. Over the years they would host numerous gatherings of the children at the Evergreen house, and would be participants in reunions of the Marshalls, Cannells, Lahaies and Warrens.

In the years following their marriage, the births of children, coupled with the adoption of children by Kim and Dale Lundy, would not only increase the number of grandchildren, but alter the ethnic and racial character of the family.

On December 21, 1980, Dona's son, Brent Gregory was married in Spokane Washington, to Barbara Ann Bauer. Their first sone, Brian Ely, was born in the Redmond Hospital on February 23, 1983. Brian was the second grandchild and the first grandson.

The third grandchild, Sarah Anne Lundy, was born on September 23, 1984. The fourth grandchild, Erin Marie Drake, was born on November 7, 1984. The fifth grandchild, Caleb Zebulon Lundy, was born on January 9, 1987. The sixth grandchild, Justin Will Lundy, was born on October 27, 1987. The seventh and eighth grandchildren, Chad Walter and Kellen Ayres Drake, were born on October 2, 1989. The ninth grandchild, William James Lundy, was born on October 31, 1991.

In their thirteenth year of marriage, the number of grandchildren had grown from 1 to 9. Not only was it a "blended family", but it had become a "rainbow family" as well. The heritage of the nine grandchildren reflected European, Hispanic, Native American, and Black ancestry. Additional spice would be added to the mix with two exchange students from Mexico; Gilberto Fernandez in 1983, and Raul Cellabos from Monterey in 1984. In the summer of 1984 Dona and John traveled to Mazatlan, and then flew to Guadalajara to visit Gilberto and his extended family.

On June 17, 1989, John Steven Marshall and Lisa Michelle Miller were married in Houston, Texas, and their first child, Kaisa Kristine Marshall was born on May 1, 1993. John and Lisa's second child, Kara Miller Marshall, was born on October 8, 1994, and the number of grandchildren grew to a total of eleven.

Steven James Marshall and Erin Shea Bergren were married in Vancouver on July 24, 1999, and their first child, Rylan James Marshall, was born on February 12, 2001. Robert James Marshall and Linda Mahrie Brownlee were married on February 2, 2000, and their first child Wriston Alexander Marshall was born on March 8, 2001. The number of grandchildren had grown to thirteen.

Rob and Linda's second child, Chloe Anne Mahrie, was born on August 11, 2002, in Vancouver increasing the number of grandchildren to 14. With the birth of Steven and Erin's second child, Elisa Bryn Marshall, on November 25, 2006, the number of grandchildren had reached the total of 15.

The birth of Gracie Anne Abare on May 29, 2008, to Sarah Anne Lundy and Bart Abare was the first great grandchild. The number of great grandchildren is now three with the birth of Taylyn to Caleb Lunday and Lindsey Thomas on July 14, 2010 and the birth of Tayson Dale Abare on November 7, 2010.

John is also active in writing and enjoys gardening, playing tennis and developing property in Grays Harbor County. John and Dona also enjoy reunions of family members; traveling and attending films and theater in the Portland/Vancouver area.

Teh home on Evergreen Highway continues to be a gathering point for family members for meals and holiday celebrations, as well as a study center for friends as they work to piece together the mosaic of life.
